PK Notes for Zion…
The liner notes had already been written by John August Schroeter, with a note from Ken Hoover in the original limited release of this collection. (See below.)
I would just like to add that Ken Hoover recently passed into the arms of his Lord and Savior and that his struggle and his good fight of faith are over and he is now whole.
I attended his memorial this past year. I am so glad that I got to know this good man!
The songs selected were, up to that time of release, some of my recordings from past albums plus some new pieces I wrote and recorded just for this special tribute album to Ken.
I still play my Zion guitar and it is very often used in the studio and occasionally played in concert. In fact, it is used on my most recent releases this year.
God bless Ken and God bless his dear and loving family!

PK Updated Notes for Zion Project:

Back in 2000 I made this project to honor my friend Ken Hoover.
It was Ken and his partner Ken Marshall that provided me with a guitar I have now used for these past 33 years~ the white Zion. As much as I enjoy my Strat and Les Paul, I must admit, I’ve done more sessions with this guitar!
Since my earlier notes this past month, I found a few additional recordings that I’ve used my Zion guitar on to be featured as bonus tracks. A number of these pieces are quite special to me!

Here’s a brief description of the pieces:
Agnus Dei—This beautiful song of worship, in its entirety, was written by my friend Michael W Smith—a truly great musician and good man! I was asked to be the opening artist at his 35 Years Celebration of his ministry and music held this past May here in Nashville. What an honor that was for me!
I played this prelude piece as an opener to the complete song and concert, joined by Mac Powell and a wonderful band and singers.
It was a grand evening!

Morning Of My Life~ Well, this song is special!—written by Barry Gibb..but what really makes it special is that this is the track I created with producer Chad Crow for Joanne Cash and her album “Unbroken”.
She’s a blessing!
I created here an instrumental version with a bit of a Duane Eddy-style and vibe. As a kid, I loved Duane Eddy records! The solo is me attempting to sound a bit like a real pedal steel player. Chad Crow plays acoustic and Dennis Holt laid the drums down, so solid!

Honey and Salt~ Years ago, I did a session with a fine guitarist and friend-Paul Sansone. Paul came to my place to record some of his songs and I added some melody and octave guitar, drums and bass to this piece. I like it a lot and thought I’d include the song since, like all the other bonus tracks, I’m playing the Zion.

Bumper Muse~ was just a short test I did of various mics in my studio before a session, I just played the drums, bass and guitars for a quick input check. Nothing major but it sounded like bumper music or something fun like that.

Star Spangled Banner~ I was recently invited to play this piece at an event honoring our veterans and their service to our country. God bless the men and women of our Armed Forces!
This is no extravagant adaption—but just a tip of the hat in honor to our Flag, our Country and the lives who have protected our freedom!

Tribute~ About 13 years ago my friend David Bainbridge- of the British group Iona, and artist in his own right, sent me 4 pieces to play on. David is a true composer and plays excellent guitar and keyboards. I’ve had this piece for many years “on the shelf” and would often listen to it. David and I love the music of the great British composers, such as Ralph Vaughan Williams and the like.
This piece is very British to me. The changes and atmosphere are unique to my ears. I enjoyed exploring where to go with the melody. Thanks Dave for sending me your track and the confidence in my ability to play over these luscious chords and changes.

In Terra~ Dale Benedict of the group Gregorian Rock invited me to play on 3 songs for their recent album. Here’s the solo I played on one of the songs—In Terra. You folks should check out their music.. It’s interesting stuff!!

JamZ-I On~ just me looping and goofing around last week in my studio…

Remember~David Harris produced a very fine album for Micky Dolenz in 2009 and he invited me to play on 6 of the 12 songs of the album by Micky titled Remember. If you’re a Monkees fan and love the era of these songs—50s through the 70s, you should check this fun album out. My wife Bernadette really likes this solo section that I played! Hats off to David for his arrangement and production—in the solo section, each measure changes 4 times as does the key throughout the solo. It was a challenge but incredibly inspiring to play over these changes! I feel a lot of emotion in this piece. One of the great highlights of my years on electric guitar! If you’re interested in what Davis Harris has done as writer and producer, check out his website:

Drums : Vinnie Colaiuta
Bass: Bob Birch
Keys: David Harris
Alex Acuna: percussion

One last thing—I felt I should omit the jam entitled “Watt Ever” as it is already on Jammed 2011 and Premium Jams.

* I just added Thin Ice to the Deluxe collection because it's a great composition by the late Jack Giering and I played my Zion guitar on this track as well. This song is from the InterDimensional Traveler project that is also available on the Garage.

There you have my updated notes on my collection of songs entitled Zion
Thank you for listening…

Original Liner Notes:

It is written that the eyes are the window to the soul. I can think of no one about whom that is more true than Ken Hoover. Though wracked by a progressively destructive disease, all its outward signs fall away upon engaging those blue eyes of his – eyes that reflect the very peace and presence of God.

Ken is a guitar maker. And though he is no longer able to carry out the work of crafting fine instruments with his own hands, a guitar maker he remains, his passion and his vision being expertly carried out by his long-time partner, Jim Gray, and faithful employee, Kirby Wilkins. Through exploring Ken’s personal expression through his chosen craft, one gains insight into the heart of this special man.

Five years of guitar repair work gave Ken the opportunity to see many guitars “from the inside out.” In 1980, believing he could improve upon the work that crossed his bench, he hung his own shingle, and began building guitars to a new standard.

What would he christen his new venture? “Well,” he says, “my last name is Hoover, so that was out. Then I thought about King David and Zion in the scripture. It was a very musical and creative place. King David wrote songs there, put bands of musicians together, and completely revolutionized the way the nation of Israel worshipped and praised God. And God said to him. “This is a man after my own heart.” Quite a legacy to live up to! So if there is something that Zion stands for, it is excellence. And I always wanted to make the most excellent guitars.”

All of Zion’s instruments are hand-built with great care, and incorporate many design improvements and tighter tolerances over the standard factory fare. “The analogy I use,” he explains, “is one of comparing the experience of eating Thanksgiving dinner at your mother’s versus eating with 500 other men at the local Salvation Army mess hall. Same ingredients, totally different experience. One has to do with bulk efficiency, while the other has to do with loving attention to the smallest detail.”

And those details have been embraced by some of the world’s finest guitarists, including Kerry Livgren, Neil Zaza, Bob Hartman, David Huff, Tom Hemby, Chris Rodriguez, Jerry McPherson and Phil Keaggy.

Says Ken, “I first heard Phil when I was 17 years old. He was playing on the radio on a syndicated show with a 15-year old named Peter York, who is now the President of Sparrow Records. I remember being amazed that a guy could sound this good, and love God, too! I was an avid fan of Phil’s long before I met him. I spoke to him briefly at Jesus ’74 in Charlotte, NC. It wasn’t until the early ‘80s that we showed Phil a guitar we had built at Zion. It was the night that his father passed away. I remember how gracious he was under those difficult circumstances. Later that year (’84). We built him a guitar – the white model that he still uses to this day.”

And, I might add, the guitar that is heard in these tracks.

Says Keaggy, “I have had a great respect for Ken Hoover as a master craftsman, but more importantly as a human being, a brother, and a friend. I have enjoyed my Zion guitar immensely, and always find the perfect moment at which to use it on recordings and in live shows.”

Just as Ken’s guitar-making career was taking flight, though, his life took a hard turn when he was diagnosed with MS, a debilitating disease that has already taken quite a toll. “It has forced me behind the computer,” he says, “and for now, off the workbench.” It also slows him down, prevents him playing guitar, slurs his speech, and occasionally forces the use of a cane when walking. “But I am praying a lot,” he adds, “because ultimately, I believe our help comes from our Maker. My hope is in the Lord, who made heaven and earth – and me! In the spiritual sense, I am actually aware of my dependence on Him. We are all dependent on Him; we can just deceive ourselves more readily when we are healthy.”

After catching Ken and Kelly Hoover’s testimony on 100 Huntley Street, Keaggy was moved to create an album featuring his work on the Zion electric guitar. “This collection,” Phil says, “is my tribute to a great man of God blessed with a gifted dream to create fine guitars – guitars that have inspired many guitarists such as myself to play music unto the Lord. This collection is my way of saying thanks to Ken Hoover and his staff at Zion Guitars, and especially to the Hoover family. Every tune presented here was played on my white Zion. And the song, Yet Will I Trust, is a special dedication to Ken for his example of faith in God during these early trials while we dwell here in the Shadowlands, awaiting that great and glorious day. Thank you Ken!”
~John August Schroeter

There are a few people who have helped me through the years – especially right now – that deserve credit; First, to Phil Keaggy – I feel privileged to know you, and am encouraged by your steadfastness through the years. My faithful wife, Kelly, who lives out the vow she made, “in sickness and in health.” My fiend and partner, Jim Gray, who came in the nick of time, and rescued me from certain disaster. My friend and former partner, Tim Tallent, and current and former employees, whose faithful labor enabled the vision to continue: John Mark Hampton, my trusty coworker, Kirby Wilkins, Rik Helderman, Kenny Marshall, Tim Burress, Rob Sharer, and Teresa Billings. Also Reynold & Kathy Mainse of 100 Huntley St., who got this project rolling on the television show they host. Thanks to you all!
