PK notes on back room tracks volume 8:

Covenant Love: I wrote this song as far back as 1975, when I heard a man speak of the persecution that our brothers and sisters were experiencing and eastern Europe. His story moved me and I went home and wrote this song. This is a recent recording I did a couple of years ago, and I’d like to dedicate this song to our friends Frank and Lori Avery.

In This Moment: I wrote this song with guitarist and producer Rich Hordinski (Over The Rhine) sometime back in the late 90s. The track was recorded up in Rich’s home studio in Cincinnati, and I recorded my vocal in my home studio.

Cover Ups: this demo was recorded on a reel to reel 8 track machine in the mid 80s. It’s a quirky little song. I may have been listening to some music that my kids were dancing to at the time.

Jewels: This one was a mystery to me when I first heard it. It was found by the team in a folder of demos but I had no memory of what it was. Was it for me or for someone else? No idea. Then a track sheet was found with the folder and it said "Jewels"- Phil's guitar parts for Twila Paris Lullabyes project- March 2002. Mystery solved. It's pretty isn't it?

Just The Same Today: I wrote this song in 1975 and found the lyrics in a book of spiritual poetry. I created a demo back then along with other songs to be considered for the 1976 album I did called Love Broke Thru. Buck Herring who beautifully produced my album suggested new lyrics, which we proceeded to write together. (The original paper with those hand-written lyrics are included as a bonus jpg in this download). But I was always fond of the original lyrics and people would occasionally ask me at concerts to play it with the old lyrics. So I made this demo just a couple of years ago, It’s kinda rough but it gets the original intent across.

Hold On: another mid 80s tune I wrote and recorded on the 8 track. This song would’ve been a good tune for consideration on the Sunday’s Child album, in my opinion.

April Song: this is one of those gentle little instrumental pieces I came up with in 2011 playing the classical guitar in two parts. I think it’s a nice song. Could be on another Lights of Madrid style album.

The Desert Song: also a mid 70’s song. I believe the PK Band used to perform this song live. I’m glad to finally have a version for my friends to listen to, since I’ve never really properly recorded it except for here in my studio as a demo.

Cool Water: around 2013 or 2014 I was playing at a festival in Indiana and met a man who came up to me and shared with me a little bit about his life. I shared with him a scripture that I’m quite fond of – Proverbs 25:25. The verse says “like cold water to the thirsty soul so is good news from a distant land.” That man is also a songwriter and his name is Tim Adkins. He sent me in a little demo of his song and asked if I’d be interested in trying to record it. This recording is the result of that request. God bless you, Tim!

Seikolos: another very close friend, Mark Lanier, invited me to put music to the text of a first-century song of worship, sung by early Christians. Translated from the original Greek, these are the words in the chorus. This song is so special to me I almost put it on my All At Once album a few years back. Mark is a noted and gifted bible teacher and scholar, so I’m grateful for his participation in helping me create this song.

We Give You All: here is another collaboration with my friend David Harris. David is an accomplished musician and producer. He produced the Micky Dolenz album titled Remember, which he invited me to play guitars on 6 of the 12 songs. This is a song inspired by verses in the book of Revelation declaring the glory and the majesty of the Son of God.

Pocket Guitar: This is a piece I recorded for my friend Lukas Brunner of Switzerland. Lukas is a talented guitar builder and he has created for me a baritone 12 string and the outdoor guitar plus the pocket guitar that is primarily a guitar neck made of very good wood and an internal pickup. It could literally fit in your back pocket (so to speak). You can go online and look up Lukas‘s instruments and you’ll find them to be very well-made.

Heart Of This Man: In Jan of 2016, I was on my way to a writing session with a very gifted guitarist and producer Mark Townsend, and as I was driving, I was listening to some classical music by Delius. When I arrived I had a melody in my head that was similar to a Frederick Delius composition and we proceeded to record what eventually became this song. I really like this song. I play drums on it, bass, guitars and sang vocals. Mark Townsend plays guitars and tambourine and mixed this piece for me. I am quite fond of this recording! This was a candidate for the All At Once album I released in 2017. The thing that's charming to me about this song is, while at the age of 66 or so, I vocally sound like the young fellow on the cover of this BRT Vol 8 collection!

Thank You - for Zac: I met Zac Steimle and his wife at an event in WA state some years ago. After some conversation at their booth, where they were displaying Zac’s ukuleles, I found myself quite interested in his ukuleles and I ended up coming home with one of them, many thanks to Zac. So, I wrote this song in appreciation for the gift of this ukulele which has the brand-name Oceana. I recorded a number of pieces with his ukulele and love the tone of it and how it plays. This song sort of tells the story of how Zac came to build these ukuleles. God bless you Zac and your family.

My Good Ole Chair: One day my wife Bernadette came into my studio and she saw me attempting to put screws back into a chair I’d been using in my studio for probably 15 years. It was coming apart in places, so she ordered me a new chair. I wrote this little song - it just came out of me, kind of like a Harry Nielsen tune that he had written about his desk, if I’m recalling correctly.

D.E.B.R.A: The original liner notes for the song are included here below, and they explain the origin of this composition. The words inspired by a young girl dealing with a serious illness! I wrote this with Hadley Hockensmith, who is a fine guitarist and bass player I’ve known for many years, since the early 70s. The interesting thing about this new recording, (the original demo is on Back Room Trax vol 3) is that I flew in the original electric solo at the end from that original tape recording from 1983 and put it on this 2016 recording. I asked John Sferra to play drums on this, and a great job he did! This song was also a consideration for the All At Once project.

[Original notes: I once met a girl who had a genetic disease and suffered from it all her life. Yet she loved Jesus. D.E.B.R.A. is the organization that is dedicated to finding the cure for the child born with this disease. I wrote this song to a girl that could be called Debra. It's a song of hope. ]

Wayward Shred: my fellow teammate in the Garage, Steven Ashlock, found this odd bit on one of my old DAT tapes and we decided to put it here. I’m not sure when and for what purpose this piece came from but it did bring a smile.
